Young, homeless gays wander streets of Boystown

CHICAGO — Feet aching in worn-out gym shoes, Robert Dibbles walks the streets of Chicago’s East Lakeview neighborhood, always on an uncertain path.

Dibbles, 24, sought refuge in Boystown six years ago, soon after announcing to family and friends in Olympia Fields that he is gay.

He said he has slept on the train and in the park, broken into boarded-up buildings in search of shelter and bartered sex for a bed. When he is unable to find a place to sleep, Dibbles said he walks through the night.

“When you are homeless, you do what you have to do to survive,” said the lanky young man, eyes fixed behind wire-rimmed glasses on the foot traffic moving along Halsted Street.

“I am not alone,” he said, gesturing toward the group gathering near the corner. “
